Arc Flash
Every year
1000 of worker come across the accident due to Arc flash. Arc flash burns can be some of the most
devastating injuries suffered in the workplace. The worker such as engineers and electricians work near
hazardous equipment, they are more prone to serious injuries because of arc
flash. So those who work in such environment needs proper guidelines or training
to ensure that no serious casualty or injury occurs.
Engineering controls, administrative
controls and appropriate personal protective clothing (PPE) can reduce the risk
of arc flash injuries. Electrical accidents happen from either electrical
shock or electrical arc flash explosions.
There’s no doubt that the results of an arc flash are often extremely violent. If they occur within in close proximity to a human the
results often lead to serious injury, even death in some cases.
Arc flash occurs when a flash of electrical
current leaves its intended path and travels through the air from one conductor
to another, or to the ground.
In electrical maintenance and electrical test & measurement, an arc
flash incident occurs when high amperage current or currents “arc” through the air from one conductor to another.
According to OSHA, an
arc flash can be caused by a variety of catalysts, including dropped tools,
condensation, material failure, dust, corrosion, or faulty installation.
According to
“The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health”, the direct and
indirect costs of work injuries and illnesses is $170 billion a year
nationwide. This is just a number though. When you figure in the human element
and the direct effects injuries have on our quality of life, the value is much
greater than a number in front of the dollar sign.
At work or at home fire safety
and prevention is a personal responsibility. When taken serious, can be the
difference in life or death, and be a positive influence to those around you.
Take the time to review your fire precautions in your workplace and help us
lower these alarming statistics.
